Abbey of San Nilo

Grottaferrata

A renowned monastery located in Grottaferrata, it was founded back in 1004 by St. Nilus of Rossano, a Greek monk who followed the rule from St. Basil and the Byzantine rite. Even today, in fact, the Abbey is still a center of Eastern culture and spirituality, faithful to the Church of Rome. The site preserves important works of art, such as Domenichino’s frescoes, Bernini’s icon, and medieval mosaics.

It also houses a rich library and an ancient book restoration laboratory, which has worked on masterpieces such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Atlanticus. Can be visited free of charge on weekends with prior reservation.
